FAQ

What is LED light therapy?

LED stands for Light Emitting Diode, a device that emits light in various colors. In light therapy masks, LEDs provide a form of skincare that targets issues such as acne, brown spots, redness, and fine lines and wrinkles. While these non-invasive treatments are commonly available in dermatologist offices, Aurelux's Lumin8™ LED face masks offer cost effective alternatives for at-home use.

Who should not use LED masks?

Anyone with an open wound or fresh tattoo should wait until they are fully healed before starting light therapy. Additionally, some skin conditions may be worsened by light therapy, so it's best to consult your dermatologist to determine if using a home light therapy mask is suitable for you.

Lumin8™ LED face masks may not be suitable in certain cases, including if you have a photosensitivity disorder, are taking medications that increase skin sensitivity to light, have an active rash or sunburn, or are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Is LED light therapy safe?

Most light therapy masks are safe for home use, though some may require you to protect your eyes depending on the light's wavelength and intensity. Dermatologists generally agree that it's important to follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully. Begin with shorter sessions and avoid overusing the device, as excessive use can cause significant skin irritation.

What are LED light wavelengths and their use?

Our Aurelux™ Lumin8™ LED masks work by emitting different colored lights, each of which has a specific wavelength that penetrates the skin at different depths to address a range of skin concerns. Wavelengths of each color are:

Blue Light (around 415 nm wavelength): Possesses antimicrobial properties and targets acne-causing bacteria.

Red Light (630 nm wavelength) and Near IR (830nm wavelength): Stimulates collagen production and promotes skin healing and rejuvenation.

Amber Light (around 605 nm wavelength): Stimulates circulation and red blood cells to reduce inflammation.

What’s better a wearable of a hand-held LED device?

The core technology in both types of tools is identical. The advantage of a wearable device is that once it's on and adjusted for a snug fit, it ensures maximum, unimpeded exposure to the LEDs. Additionally, a mask covers a larger surface area, allowing you to treat your entire face or eye area in just three minutes. In contrast, a hand-held device requires you to treat your skin section by section in three-minute increments to achieve the same result. While this approach is effective, our busy schedules make efficiency a top priority.

Are the Aurelux™ Lumin8™ LED Face Mask and Neck Deck safe for melasma?

Absolutely. If you have melasma, you can safely use your LED device.

Will using my Aurelux™ Lumin8™ LED Face Mask and/or Neck Deck more than once a day increase its benefits?

It depends on your goal. If you're aiming for acne reduction or collagen stimulation, multiple daily sessions won’t provide additional benefits, as skin cells become fully saturated after just one three-minute session and can't absorb more LED energy. (It’s similar to drinking a lot of water—your body uses what it needs and expels the rest.) However, if you’re looking to reduce inflammation, you can safely use your Aurelux™ Lumin8™ LED Face Mask and/or Neck Deck more than once a day to help with redness or puffiness.

Is it safe to use retinol after my Aurelux™ Lumin8™ LED Face Mask and/or Neck Deck LED treatment?

Absolutely. In fact, using retinol after your Aurelux™ Lumin8™ LED Face Mask and/or Neck Deck LED session is an excellent idea because both retinol and LEDs stimulate collagen production in different ways. Combining them maximizes collagen-boosting effects.

How do I prepare my skin for an Aurelux™ Lumin8™ LED Face Mask and/or Neck Deck LED treatment?

Your skin, whether on your face or body, should be clean and free of makeup or heavy moisturizer. Ensuring nothing obstructs the skin's absorption of the energy from the LEDs is crucial.

Will LEDs hurt my eyes?

Yes, LED energy is mild, but it still has an impact. During in-office LED treatments, patients wear opaque eye shields because they sit in front of an LED panel that doesn't block red light from their eyes. Although at-home devices aren't as powerful as those used by dermatologists, it's still important to consider light exposure and eye safety. The Aurelux™ Lumin8™ LED Face Mask has eye socket inserts that are designed to protect the eyes during use. For instance, the Aurelux™ Lumin8™ LED Face Mask fits snugly against the skin, preventing light from reaching the eyes. This is a significant advantage that wearables have over handheld devices.

When is the best time of day for a treatment?

It's entirely a matter of personal preference. The key is to use your device consistently to see results. If it's easier for you to fit in your daily session before bed while winding down, that's perfect. Alternatively, if you prefer to start your day with the treatment, that's great as well.

Which light is most effective for reducing post-inflammatory acne marks?

Definitely red. You can learn more about the benefits of each LED color and how they work here.

How long will my Aurelux™Lumin8™ LED Face Mask and/or Neck Deck work before I need to replace it?

The Aurelux™Lumin8™ LED Face Masks and Neck Decks are designed to last for years under normal conditions. While water resistant we recommend NOT wearing your LED devices in the shower or bath. All of these devices are fully rechargeable and you should get between 8 and 10 sessions between charges.

How do I clean my Aurelux™ Lumin8™ LED Face Mask and Neck Deck?

Cleaning your LED device after each session is crucial because oil and bacteria can build up on the inside cover, which can ironically cause acne—especially if you're using the mask to treat breakouts. After your daily LED treatment, wipe down the inside of the device with an alcohol pad or a washcloth dampened with warm, soapy water. Be sure to let it dry completely before your next use.
